English Language Ministry

ELM Graduates

MISSION:

The English Language Ministry (ELM) provides quality English as a Second Language  instruction in order to promote responsible self-sufficiency.  To facilitate attendance and assist young children in learning English, ELM offers free childcare for student's children age three and under.

Classes are held at East Dallas Christian Church Monday thru Thursday 9am-11am and 12:30pm -2:30pm, corresponding with the DISD school calendar.  A part time director, part time assistant and 6 childcare workers are the only paid employees.  Over 60 dedicated volunteer tutors make the program successful.  With the expansion of the afternoon classes this year, more volunteer opportunities are available.

ELM is a ministry of East Dallas Christian Church, Northridge Presbyterian Church, St. Andrews Presbyterian Church and First Community Church.  It receives support from these churches as well as other Dallas churches, service organizations, individuals, foundations and the students themselves.

Head Start

The EDCC facility provides  classrooms and additional space for 80 children (ages 3-5) of low income multi-cultural families.

Head Start programs promote school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of children through the provision of educational, health, nutritional, social and other services to enrolled children and families. They engage parents in their children's learning and help them in making progress toward their educational, literacy and employment goals. Significant emphasis is placed on the involvement of parents in the program.

Volunteers are needed to help in the classrooms and to help host special events for the children: the annual Community Carnival in October and the Valentine Party in February.  In December volunteers are always welcome to sponsor a family at Christmas.
