After George and I married we attended my church for several years. But it was “my church.” We decided to look for a new church that would be “our church.”

Why did I become a member of EDCC? Good Question. Why am I still a member of EDCC? Better answer. I first came to EDCC as a substitute singer for Dana Kelly. As everyone, I was in awe of the beauty of this building…but that was nothing compared to the beauty of its people.

In 1996 we were going to spend our first Christmas in 20 years without going back to Georgia to visit family. As the season was getting closer, we were beginning to have that feeling of sadness you get when you visit then you leave the people you love. We had been talking about Church searching for a while because of an emptiness we were both experiencing and it was really being reinforced now that we were staying.

In January of 1984 my life made a major turn. Elaine had just accepted my proposal of marriage, and I moved to Dallas to start a new career. Other than my job interview I had never visited Dallas before this time. With Elaine back in Missouri until our wedding in August, those first months in 1984 were likely the most detached I’ve ever been from family and long time friends.

I began attending East Dallas Christian Church in January of 2007. My father was the minister of FCC Terrell for thirteen years before being called to a Disciples church in Tennessee last year. My parents’ move was an incentive to think about what I really wanted to find in a church, and was a good opportunity to examine my own faith. I decided I wanted to stay with the Disciples of Christ denomination, due to the denominational emphasis on openness of belief and communion.

For years Jay and I searched for a “common” church home. Twelve years later, and after the birth of our second child, we began to get more serious. Our motivation was to expose our young daughters, Hannah and Juin, to role models with solid Christian core foundations.

Prior to coming to East Dallas Christian Church, I had problems few would be willing to imagine. I wasn’t really close to anyone. My utmost concern was an opportunity for belonging. I was certainly ready for a new beginning.
